On Tuesday, President Trump’s speech at the U.N. General Assembly was probably the script that would be remembered by the diplomats where world leaders were seen laughing on the camera. These videos went viral.
One of them captured the reactions of the German delegation as Trump said: “Germany will become totally dependent on Russian energy if it does not immediately change course. Here in the Western Hemisphere, we are committed to maintaining our independence from the encroachment of expansionist foreign powers.”
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas was seen smirking and amusing alone his colleagues. This was not the first time were Trump lashed down on Germany for the gas imports from Russia.
“Germany, as far as I’m concerned, is captive to Russia because it’s getting so much of its energy from Russia,” Trump told NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, while speaking on camera at the time. “We have to talk about the billions and billions of dollars that’s being paid to the country we’re supposed to be protecting you against.”
Germany chancellor Angela Merkel, acknowledge for the first time from April that Nord Stream 2 was not only a business stratergy but had political intentions too. she also opened up to the criticism from Central and Eastern Europe in past months and has no attempts to stop the plans.
Trump has not changed the calculas on his attacks. But Merkel has responded and said that she is in a better position to judge her country and its dependency than the current U.S. president.
“I’ve experienced myself a part of Germany controlled by the Soviet Union, and I’m very happy today that we are united in freedom,” she said at the time.
After another diplomatic warnings from Trump, German’s had smirk to offer.
